Chapter 15

Felicia hummed to herself as she waited for the popcorn to finish in the microwave. Gavin was coming over again this morning and she was feeling a little too eager to see him.

Their decorating session yesterday had left the tree bare, but given Felicia a very nice case of beard burn instead and she found she far preferred the latter over the former.

“But!” she whispered to herself as she poured the popcorn into a bowl. “This time we are going to decorate. And we’re going to do it the old fashioned way.”

It had been several years since Felicia had been able to have a real Christmas. Decorations weren’t a good idea when her mother was easily irritated and didn’t completely understand why the house suddenly became a winter wonderland instead of what she was used to.

As such, all the garland and tree ornaments had stayed packed away, but this year…

Felicia blinked back the slight sting of tears.

“This year will be different,” she whispered thickly.

There was a banging on the door and it opened before Felicia could walk over, causing her to roll her eyes.

“There’s no privacy in this place,” she called out from the kitchen.

“Like you want any!” Gavin hollered back. He was carrying a tub of supplies and with a sinking heart, Felicia realized that he still planned to work. She had set her hopes on the fact that they would spend the day together.

It’s not like you asked or anything, she reminded herself. You both have jobs to do. Her eyes went to her computer. She really should do some writing. But she knew there would be no way to get her mind into it. The story happening in real life was far better than the one on the written page.

“Popcorn for breakfast?” Gavin grinned and tsked his tongue. “Seems a little…odd.” He stepped up close and kissed her cheek. “Good morning,” he said softly.

Felicia had to keep herself from sighing…or maybe swooning was the right word? Geez, it was nice to have someone in her life again. It had been too long. “Good morning.” She forced herself to straighten and not melt into a puddle at his feet. “And the popcorn is for the tree.” She grabbed the needle pack and thread she’d found in the clogged hall closet. “Mrs. Wickers didn’t have ornaments, but she had sewing supplies.”

Gavin nodded slowly, his eyebrows up. “You’re going to…make…decorations?”

“Of course.” Felicia frowned. “Haven’t you ever done that? Sat in front of a roaring fire, eating as much popcorn as you string, listening to Christmas music and sipping hot chocolate?”

Gavin was a little too still and Felicia realized this was about his family again. Goodness, what kind of upbringing did this guy have? It must have been miserable!

“Come on.” She grabbed his hand and led him to the sitting room. “Sit down.” She pushed him into the recliner.

Gavin looked amused, but allowed her to manhandle him.

“Oh yeah. Popcorn. Just a sec.” She handed him the needle and thread and went back for the bowl.
